Who we are

From the day I received a toy potter’s wheel for my eigth birthday, I knew I wanted to be an artist and potter. So much so, that when the wheel stopped spinning after two uses, I refused to let my parents return the toy. While I pursued art in college and certainly found creative inspiration in raising my children, my self critic always seemed to inhibit any dedicated focus to my art. Dabbling in print making for years, I denied myself the grace to enjoy the rewards of making art or embrace the joy others found in my work.

Years ago now, I returned to ceramics. As a beginner. Without expectations or a vision of the end product. I reconnected with the unique art form in a surprising way. Ceramics is physical. Demanding of routinized practice. Messy. And unpredictable until it isn’t. It reminds me of cooking and printmaking and swimming and weightlifting and cleaning and designing.  All things I love. It is born of the natural world - water and earth and fire. So when I began again, I did not care that my pots were heavy or lopsided or oozing in glaze. I was playing in a medium without opinions of me as an artist. As corny as it sounds, I was set free.

Today, I am much more practiced and intensely dedicated to my art. My work is rooted in simplicity. Forms are pared down to their essence, allowing the clay to contribute its own natural voice. Drawn from the earth, each piece reflects the quiet beauty inherent in the material itself: its color, its texture, its elemental form. Each work becomes a meditation on presence, process, and the profound elegance of the unadorned. I find art in everyday routines, so I hope my work reflects a deep appreciation for the ordinary made beautiful.

Currently, I work out of a community studio in Madison, WI.
